It worked as well as another set I had purchased locally for $15 - we tested it around our 1.25 mile block and lost reception at the half-way point. Too much interference from something I guess. I returned it and kept the $15 pair.

For anyone just purchasing their first set of radios, just know that 20 mile communications can only happen on open land / water with no obstacles. Line of Sight must be unobstructed. Otherwise, expect a good 3 - 5 mile range around town with some possible dropouts.

While the radios have very user-friendly NOAA features, that's the extent of the good stuff. We use these radios to help us back our camper into campground sites. One of us is in the truck and one is outside giving directions, so we are never very far apart. From the beginning the reception was terrible. Very distorted. And the transmit buttons just don't have a solid feel to them. As a result, many of our transmissions were cut short or missed altogether. After a few hours of use, one of our units quit altogether. We went back to our old Cobras, for which I paid $35 for the pair. Reception is exceedingly clearer, and the transmit buttons have a solid feel. I expected much better from Motorola, but the Walkabout was a disgrace.

I used the radio at the beach, and got about 3/4 of a mile from the beach around buildings before I couldn't hear my wife at all. The emergency band works well, though, so it would be great for emergency instructions. The built-in light works great.

Battery issues and button failure are the main issues. As I understand it, the biggest problem is the chargers (sold separately) are not "smart" chargers, meaning that you can easily over-charge the battery and dramatically shorten its life. All that said, when the walkies do work they are great, the sound is clear, etc on our 12 acre farm. They are SOOO much cheaper than the professional next step up that we're continuing to buy them frequently to replace the broken ones, although soon I hope to try professional & hopefully more durable units. The belt clips and the charger build quality are shockingly poor.

Review by always looking for a good read for Uniden GMR2889-2CK 28 Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Rating: Our family goes on cruises every few years and we find this 2-way radio package to be a great resource. We bought several pairs and give them out to everyone in our group. On a huge ship it really helps to track where people are and helps you to get to places/activities on time. We got this model because it has so many channel choices and had a 28 mile optimal distance. We had no trouble on the ship but when we used it at home (drove) it stopped working at about 1 mile away. For our uses, we find it a good product. A little pricey but like I said, good for the times when you really need it.

At The Park you can get few miles pretty easly. A lot of features and the privacy codes which i like in these radios. These radios pretty easy to use, nice clear voice and so far i never had any enterferance. For the price you get realy awesome radios. Plus transmitting on FRS channels are FREE !!! That counts too.

My radios were never out of contact and were always able to make a call. Also, I should note that we used them all day and they never ran out of battery as long as I charged them at night.

My only gripe is that the belt clip is too lose for extreme sports, so I had to put it on my jacket.

Great radios, glad I bought them.

Review by Harry Vonk for Uniden GMR2889-2CK 28 Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Rating: We have purchased more than a dozen of the Uniden GMR2889-2CK (2-pack) radios for use at a hotel in Central America. The radios are used heavily and daily by hotel staff including our security people who value the privacy code feature.

We are in a semi-tropical climate where humidity is high and where there are heavy rains during part of the year. These radios hold up well with constant exposure to these conditions. Battery life is good and the radios work well both within and without the 50 individual villas and other buildings on the property. We also use these radios for off-property communications in the hilly countryside around the hotel. The radios perform well in this terrain also.

Baker for Uniden GMR2889-2CK 28 Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Rating: I purchased these for a car caravan summer trip in 2008 where we would not have the use of cell phones due to some of the remote locations out in the western U.S. The claim of a range of 28 miles is absolutely ridiculous. Typically 1 watt = 1 mile under good conditions. I figured that even if I got ¼ of that range it would still be good, it was not. We have very poor communications car to car even when we were 200 feet apart. Broken and dropped transmissions not to mention poor battery life (even when I charged them every night in the hotel). I'm not sure how Uniden is getting away with the performance claims on this product. I was sorely disappointed with these and I'm a Uniden fan and have been for years.
